St. George

SYDNEY
HARBOUR NIGHT

Walking into the metro night
Where noises were dropping
We found the broad streets
Were still brightly lit
With colourful lights
Though the symphony of busy lives
Had turned absolutely down
With some left over
Of glories
We strolled slowly down
A side street
Round lamps along the roadside
Looked like full moons
But were too bright
Lights set under the ground
Radiating with irritation
They were like unhidden suns
That were breaking through the bricks
An idea then occurred to my mind
Even striking brilliance
Is at times not what we want
Soon a wide opening of the harbour
Appeared in view
We walked step by step
Down to the harbour
The cool and fresh air
Washed away the muddy weariness
Of our tired bodies
A long bench at the side of the street
Was nicely dustless
The last ferry of the night
Sailed soundlessly into darkness
Then our busy bodies and tired souls
Parked temporarily
In this quiet Circular Quay
There were no wind, no surf
No moon, nor any bird’s noise
The Opera House slept profoundly
In the dark blue setting between the sky and
ocean
The Harbour Bridge also rest peacefully
Amidst the gently shades of the lights
The mirror-like water surface
Reflected the dreaming mansions
That were long and huge
And the charming lights
Glittered tranquilly in the sea
Over the St. George building
Gliding voicelessly were a flock of seagulls
Forming an image of a clock
That swivelled into a lengthy night
Raising our head to watch the black sky curtain
We could see with caution
That in this piece of silent thoughts
There were countless hidden stars
Although not shining
They deserved to be counted
One after another by our fingers
By then, our souls
Took off gracefully
In the space of such tranquillity
In this night view of no worries
No memory, anxiety or headache
There stood two speechless creatures
Hand in hand
Cold and warmth were floating
In the night fog
That seemed short-termed and long-termed
Feelings were drifting
Between emptiness and vacancies
And in the silently reserved delight
…
